About Me

My name is Eduardo García-Molina and I’m a Classics PhD candidate entering my fifth year at the University of Chicago. My research largely focuses on the Seleukid Empire and greater trends in the governance of ancient states and infrastructural power. Currently I am working towards my dissertation which will tentatively deal with the interconnected role that information, administration, and communication had on legitimizing Seleukid state power among its heterogeneous population.

I am also interested how the Seleukid Empire and other “Eastern” polities and peoples are treated in Graeco-Roman historiography with a particular fascination regarding sexually transgressive acts. I am continually looking at how ancient historians saw the growth, life, and death of ancient polities through this ethnographic lens and how these inherent beliefs shape our understanding of the existing information on the Seleukid Empire. Due to my research, I have an interest in epigraphy, numismatics, art history, and archaeology in addition to literary texts and I try to follow the path set by others in crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries.

In addition to this, I frequently research and write on video games that deal with the ancient Mediterranean. Like many, my interest in the ancient world was kindled by playing games like Rome: Total War and Age of Mythology. I have also written on the reception of the ancient cultures in Latin America with a particular emphasis on the Caribbean, specifically Cuba and Puerto Rico.
